Growing up, I just loved ol’ Slappy.

He’d amble out on stage, effecting a face of weary resignation, holding a cigarette—which he puffed absently and as needed for comic pause or punctuation. One of my favorite bits:

“Landlord called today.” Pause. “Said he’s gonna raise the rent.”

Longer pause.

“Okay by me…” Long drag on the cigarette; looks away, then shrugs back.

“I sure can’t raise it.”

I learned a lot from Slappy.

After a U.S. State visit in 1981, and just before departing for home, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin scheduled a quick early-morning meeting at the airport with Secretary of State Alexander Haig.

The next day, headlines read,  “Begin and Haig Breakfast Sandwiched In”.

All the short, snappy ones are taken. I’ve been offered big money for mine, of course, now that I got famous.

I know a guy had to settle for a domain name so long, if he decides to print it on his business card he’ll have to wrap it around the back.
